Title: “The master is a Zealander, but lives with his wife and familie at Stockholme”: the importance of foreign seamen and their networks for the development of Swedish seafaring in the 17th century. Description: Around 1650, Swedish shipping expanded for the first time beyond coastal waters into new maritime regions outside the Baltic Sea. During the early years of this expansion phase, Dutch captains and lieutenants of the Swedish navy played a pivotal role as officers, masters and pilots of Swedish naval vessels, company ships and private merchantmen. To explain why and how these Dutch seafarers became Sweden’s navigation specialists, this lecture will discuss their characteristics, maritime knowledge and experiences as well as their networks in Swedish society.
