In 2025 deed een recordaantal fellows onderzoek in Het Scheepvaartmuseum. Zij hebben daarbij vernieuwend en uiteenlopend onderzoek gedaan naar objecten en verzamelingen in de museumcollectie; variërend van vrouwen die met de Holland-Amerika Lijn alleen de oversteek maakten tot verpleegkundige handelingen door niet-medisch personeel aan boord van de koopvaardij in de twintigste eeuw. Vier fellows presenteren de voorlopige resultaten van hun onderzoeksprojecten graag aan u tijdens de jaarlijkse Fellowshipsmiddag in Het Scheepvaartmuseum op vrijdag 27 februari 2026. Daarnaast stellen wij ook graag de nieuwe lichting gastonderzoekers aan u voor. U bent hiervoor van harte uitgenodigd!

The KITLV invites scholars working in the fields of Southeast Asian and Caribbean Studies to apply for a Visiting Fellowship. The Royal Netherlands Institute of Southeast Asian and Caribbean Studies (KITLV-KNAW) is an Academy research institute. The KITLV conducts interdisciplinary and comparative historical research. Its research focus is Southeast Asia and the Caribbean, with an emphasis on Indonesia and the ‘Dutch’ Caribbean. It is particularly interested in such issues as state formation, violence and citizenship, processes of mobility and the formation of ethnic and national identity. KITLV is active in the humanities, social sciences and comparative area studies and works closely with Leiden University. More information

Oceanista – Fashion & Sea verbindt het maritieme verleden, het modebeeld van nu en de duurzame toekomst van kleding. Daarom organiseert Het Scheepvaartmuseum nog twee avondvullende programma’s samen met spraakmakende mensen uit de creatieve wereld: journalist en fashion activist Janice Deul, collectief The Gang Is Beautiful (TGIB) en handwerkcollectief Knits and Notes. Meer informatie

De Nederlandse taal kent talrijke woorden, uitdrukkingen en gezegden die in verband gebracht kunnen worden met de zeemanstaal. Zoals daar zijn: iemand de loef afsteken, niet te hard van stapel lopen, niet aan de bak komen, een oogje in het zeil houden, er is geen land met hem te bezeilen, proosten op de goede afloop, bakzeil halen, iemand de volle laag geven, iemand een hart onder de riem steken, en dergelijke. We welcome graduate students working on topics related to early modern Caribbean and Atlantic slavery and emancipation to participate in a one-day graduate seminar on Thursday 22 October 2026 at the KITLV in Leiden, The Netherlands. The KITLV is a research institute dedicated to the study of societal challenges, focusing on the histories and afterlives of colonialism in the Caribbean, Southeast Asia, and the Netherlands. Op zaterdag 14 én zondag 15 februari verandert Museum Batavialand in een levendige scène uit de 17e eeuw. Stap aan boord van het imposante schip Batavia en ontmoet de bemanning: zeelieden, timmerlieden en soldaten bevolken het dek en brengen het schip opnieuw tot leven. Stap jij ook 400 jaar terug de tijd in? Je ontmoet bemanningsleden uit het verleden: scheepstimmerlieden, matrozen en zeesoldaten in historische kleding laten zien hoe het leven aan boord eruitzag. Ze geven demonstraties, beantwoorden vragen en vertellen over hun reis, werk en dagelijks bestaan op zee. Ook zullen musketten worden afgevuurd net zoals ze dat 400 jaar geleden deden. The upcoming lecture in our Ships & Seafaring 1500–1800 Lecture Series (Prize Papers Talks Special Edition). The series is presented as a special collaboration between the German Maritime Museum, Leibniz Institute for Maritime History (Bremerhaven), and the Prize Papers Project (University of Oldenburg / The National Archives, UK). Next Monday, 9 February, 1-2pm (CET), noon (UK), 7-8am Eastern Standard Time (EST): Hielke Nieuwenhuize. Title: “The master is a Zealander, but lives with his wife and familie at Stockholme”: the importance of foreign seamen and their networks for the development of Swedish seafaring in the 17th century. Description: Around 1650, Swedish shipping expanded for the first time beyond coastal waters into new maritime regions outside the Baltic Sea. During the early years of this expansion phase, Dutch captains and lieutenants of the Swedish navy played a pivotal role as officers, masters and pilots of Swedish naval vessels, company ships and private merchantmen. To explain why and how these Dutch seafarers became Sweden’s navigation specialists, this lecture will discuss their characteristics, maritime knowledge and experiences as well as their networks in Swedish society.
